Alasmidonta mccordi (Athearn)
USA: St. Clair County / Alabama
Coosa Elktoe (English)
extinction date: shortly after 1964 (?)
|This species was
scientifically described in the year 1964, it is known from only a single
specimen, which was collected in the Coosa River in St. Clair County in Alabama
shortly prior to its impoundment.
The species is considered extinct.
Especially adult freshwater mussels are very vulnerable to increasing sedimentation, choking the animals. The impoundment resp. the transformation of many larger rivers into waterways, has in some parts of the USA led to the extinction of several of these freshwater mussel species.
