~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Especially adult freshwater mussels are very vulnerable to increasing sedimentation, choking the animals. The impoundment resp. the transformation of many larger rivers into waterways, has in some parts of the USA led to the extinction of several of these freshwater mussel species.
