Achatinella caesia   (Gulick)

Grey Blue Oahu Tree-Snail
(Achatinella caesia)

syn. -

Hawai'i Islands: O'ahu

local name:

Kahuli (Hawaiian)
Pupu kani oe (Hawaiian)
Pupu kuahiwi (Hawaiian)

size: ca. 2 cm (shell height)

extinction date: last seen ca. 1900

The Grey Blue Oahu Tree-Snail is split into five (invalid) subspecies, Achatinella caesia ssp. caesia (Gulick), Achatinella caesia ssp. cervina (Gulick), Achatinella caesia ssp. cognata (Gulick), Achatinella caesia ssp. concidens (Gulick) as well as Achatinella caesia ssp. littoralis (Pilsbry & Cooke).

The species died out already at the beginning of the 20th century - the destruction of its habitat, but also excessive collecting of living specimens by shell collectors are the reasons therefor.
